The Idea
Butterfly Alpaca is a young brand, specialising in scarves. The brand is very dedicated to the sustainable and ecological production of textiles, which makes this a very natural and unique range. Butterfly Alpaca is run by Volker Stiens – a student with a passion for Alpacas and there amazingly soft fibre. Volkers’ dedication for this project was the driving force to take the alpaca from the field to the British consumer.
Rather than being a new breed of animal as the name may suggest – Butterfly Alpaca - is the name they choose after watching an alpaca looking at a butterfly. This perfectly sums up the beautiful and inquisitive nature of alpacas and the natural and ecological the alpacas should live.

Butterly Alpaca believes that alpaca have the most superior fibre used in fashion production, which comes in up-to 22 natural colours. The aim is to make use of this natural variety and its luxurious-soft texture.
All our garments have been made of 'Farm Yarn' (www.farmyarn.co.uk), the ecological, natural-soft Alpaca yarn. Farm Yarn comes direct from British Farms and has been spun in a British Specialist Mill into yarn.
Rather than using cheap production facilities in the Far East – as many other fashion labels do – Butterfly Alpaca believes that the knowledge and long-established experience of British Craftspeople should be utilised and encouraged, helping to stop this age-old craftsmanship from vanishing from this country.
This is why all our processes (selecting fleeces, grading/sorting, spinning and then making them into garments) have been sourced entirely in the United Kingdom.
